FLOODING UPDATE: Northbound I-35W reduced to one lane Sept. 28 and Sept. 29

Lane closures needed as crews construct temporary dike to protect traffic

Roseville, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close the right two lanes of northbound I-35W between Cliff Road and Black Dog Road in Burnsville overnight on Tuesday, Sept. 28 and Wednesday, Sept. 29.

The closures will begin at 9 p.m. both days, and all lanes of traffic will be re-opened at 4 a.m. the following day.

The closures are necessary as crews construct a temporary dike along the outside shoulder of I-35W. The temporary dike is being built as a precautionary measure to protect northbound I-35W from potential flooding in the event that rising water from the backwaters of the Minnesota River exceeds the currently forecasted flood crest levels.

“This is a proactive, cost effective measure to help protect a critical roadway and river crossing with the least possible affect on traffic,” said Bev Farraher, Mn/DOT Metro District Maintenance Engineer.

The last time a similar dike was built along I-35W was in 2001.
