New Hastings Bridge moves one step closer to construction
ROSEVILLE, MN – The Minnesota Department of Transportation has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to three firms that qualified to submit design-build proposals for the Hastings Bridge project.
The three firms competing for the final contract are all joint ventures and include Flatiron/Kiewit, Lunda/Ames, and PCL/Kraemer.
Groundbreaking for the long-anticipated bridge replacement project is expected later this year.
“The RFP means that we are one step closer to the final design and construction of the project,” said Steve Kordosky, Mn/DOT Engineer and Project Manager.
The RFP outlines contractual criteria such as structural, roadway, steel and concrete requirements for two distinct bridges: a cable suspension bridge and an arch bridge with a “basket handle” design. Each firm may submit a proposal for only one of the two bridge options, with a cost not to exceed $220 million.
Mn/DOT will review the proposals and award a “best-value” design-build contract in June 2010, with construction scheduled to begin in late summer 2010.
Release of the RFP comes after environmental work, preliminary design, public involvement, a Visual Quality process that will guide the project aesthetics, and funding authorization from the Federal Highway Administration. The preliminary work was coordinated by Mn/DOT, and included extensive involvement from the public, the city of Hastings and many other local, state and federal agencies.
More information, including representations of both bridge designs, can be found on the project’s web site at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/hastingsbridge/.
