Overnight lane restrictions on I-35W in Minneapolis begin May 18

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Motorists will experience nighttime lane restrictions on northbound and southbound I-35W between downtown Minneapolis and 42nd Street starting at 10 p.m., May 18, and continuing through Friday, May 22.

During this time northbound I-35W will be reduced to one lane and southbound I-35W will be reduced to two lanes. Crews will re-open lanes at 5 a.m. daily so three lanes will be operating by morning rush hour. The process is timed to minimize traffic disruption.

Additional nighttime lane closures will continue to occur periodically on I-35W from 42nd Street to downtown Minneapolis through the completion of the project this fall.

Crews will be completing work necessary for the construction of a new managed lane corridor and MnPASS Express Lane. The managed lane corridor is the first of its kind in Minnesota and will run from Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis on I-35W.

The work is part of the ongoing reconstruction of I-35W from Burnsville to downtown Minneapolis that is funded by the Urban Partnership Agreement.

The UPA projects will improve traffic flow by reducing congestion on I-35W, Highway 77/Cedar Avenue and in downtown Minneapolis using transit, road pricing, technology and telecommuting. With the completion of UPA projects, commuters will experience more transportation choices, less traffic congestion and reduced commute times on one of the busiest roadways in Minnesota. This project’s goals reflect Mn/DOT’s strategic direction to develop innovative multi-modal solutions and improve mobility of people and freight.

The UPA is funded by $133.3 million in federal funds and $50.2 million in matching state funds, and will create about 5,000 jobs.
