Stillwater lift bridge reopens with vehicle restrictions following truck crash Monday afternoon
After being closed for more than five-and-a-half hours following a truck crash Monday afternoon, the Minnesota Highway 36/Wisconsin 64 lift bridge across the St. Croix River reopened to traffic at 7:35 p.m. Monday. The lift span, which connects between Stillwater, Minn. and Houlton, Wis., remains operational.
The bridge is now restricted to car and pickup truck traffic only until repairs can be made. All other trucks should follow the posted detours to cross the St. Croix River on Interstate 94 at Hudson, Wis.
A delivery truck heading westbound into Minnesota struck numerous pieces of overhead cross-bracing and became stuck on the bridge about 1:55 p.m. yesterday. The crash closed both lanes of traffic crossing the bridge.
Mn/DOT bridge engineers are continuing to assess damage to the bridge to determine the extent of repairs. Motorists may encounter occasional daytime lane closures in the next week for additional inspection of the damage. An emergency contract will be let and repairs are expected to begin within a month. Those repairs will require daytime full closures of the bridge.
