Roseville,
Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has completed building a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 13 and Scott County Road 2. Work began on this project in July and it opened to traffic yesterday. There is some minor work left to be done on the project, however this work will not have significant traffic impacts.
“This intersection was the site of some very serious crashes,” said David Herzog, project engineer, “we decided this location was well suited for a roundabout because they tend to reduce the number and severity of crashes.”
How a roundabout works:
Vehicles approaching a roundabout must wait for a gap in traffic to enter the circle. Vehicles enter and move throughout the circle in a counterclockwise direction. All turns are right-only turns. There are no stoplights or stop signs within the circle. Signs within the roundabout identify street or ramp locations to assists motorists in finding their appropriate exit.
Roundabouts decrease the number of opportunities for vehicle paths to intersect. Most crashes involve left turns and roundabouts allow only right turns, thereby eliminating this problem. Roundabouts also encourage lower driving speeds, which gives drivers more reaction time.

Mn/DOT reminds motorists to SLOW DOWN in work zones and NEVER enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones. Please join us in a safety partnership. For statewide traffic, construction and travel information visit www.511mn.org or call 511.
