(Roseville, Minn.) — Crews removed the final barricades shortly after 11 a.m. this morning, opening the new Edgerton Street bridge to traffic. Reconstruction of the bridge that spans the Interstate 35E/694 commons between Little Canada and Vadnais Heights began last July. Work included new approach roads to the bridge and reconstruction of the intersection of Edgerton St. and County Rd. D along with new utility construction, raising the road grade and new pavement.
Reconstruction of the bridge is the first stage of the multi-year “Unweave the Weave” project to rebuild Interstates 35E and 694 along the two interstates' common section through Vadnais Heights and Little Canada.
The Unweave project features reconstruction of approximately 3.2 miles of I-35E from four lanes to six lanes wide and approximately 2.8 miles of I-694 from four lanes to six lanes wide. Additional work includes construction of eight highway bridges, storm water ponds, noisewalls and other aesthetic enhancements. Final completion is slated for the fall of 2008.
A celebration to mark the first milestone is scheduled at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27 on the northeast end of the bridge. After brief remarks from elected officials and Mn/DOT project personnel a ceremonial ribbon will be cut to officially open the bridge.
Mn/DOT reminds motorists to SLOW DOWN in the work zone and NEVER enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones. Please join us in a safety partnership. For statewide traffic, construction and travel information visit www.511mn.org or call 511.
