Roseville,
Minn. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT)
will begin the Highway 12 realignment project between Wayzata
Blvd. in WAYZATA and County Rd. 6 in ORONO on Thursday, Aug. 15.
The
project reconstructs Highway 12 as a limited access roadway in
a new alignment south of where it currently lies and parallel
with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks.
Work
will begin in LONG LAKE on the surface streets as crews clear trees
and brush and prepare the various roadways that cross the current
Highway 12 corridor.
Initially,
crews also will excavate for the new railroad bed and revise the
signal system at Highway 12 and Old Crystal Bay Rd. in Long Lake.
For
safetys sake, bicyclists and pedestrians are discouraged
from biking or walking inside the railroad bed or the railroad
right-of-way during the project.
When
completed in 2006, the new Highway 12 between the two points will
provide added capacity, reduced congestion, smoother travel and
increased safety. Interchanges will replace the current intersections
at County Rd. 6, on the western end of the project, and Wayzata
Blvd. on the eastern end of the project.
Mn/DOT
urges motorists always to drive with caution and reminds them
to SLOW DOWN in work zones and NEVER enter a roadway that has
been blocked with barriers or cones. For updated statewide traffic,
construction and travel information visit www.511mn.org.
