Roseville,
Minn. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT)
will resume construction of the Highway 62 (Crosstown)/Highway
55 (Hiawatha Ave.) interchange in MINNEAPOLIS the week of July
7.
Motorists
may expect daily shoulder closures early in the project. However,
overnight and off-peak lane closures and lane shifts also will
occur throughout the life of the project.
Weather
permitting, the new interchange will be completed by Fall 2004.
Mn/DOT
halted original construction of the project in Summer 2001 when
questions arose with regard to the affect the new interchange
would have on groundwater flow to nearby Camp Coldwater Spring.
Mn/DOT
reviewed a number of alternative designs that would permit finishing
construction of the interchange while avoiding any adverse effects
to the spring. The final design raises portions of the roadway
in the area where depressed, and a "liner" is being
implemented as part of the new design to prevent groundwater from
entering the roadway bed. The Federal government and the state
and local agencies involved are in agreement with the design.
Mn/DOT
urges motorists always to drive with caution and reminds them
to SLOW DOWN in work zones and NEVER enter a roadway that has
been blocked with barriers or cones. For updated statewide traffic,
construction and travel information visit www.511mn.org.
