Hiawatha Avenue - Past,
Present, and Future
1988
Reconstruction of Hiawatha Avenue /Highway 55 from Hwy. 62 /Crosstown
to Interstate 94 started in 1988 between Nawadaha Blvd. and East 31st
Street.
1992-97
Work continued in the area between East 24th Street and I-94 from 1992
until 1997.
1996
Construction of the Hiawatha Ave. bridge over Lake Street started and
was completed in the fall of 1997. Work only consisted of constructing
the bridge and not the roadway leading up to the bridge.
1998
In August, a separate project began in the area of Lake St. to build the
roadway that leads to the bridge over Lake St. A temporary roadway wasconstructed
on the west side of old Hiawatha Ave. between East 28th St. and East 24th
St. Traffic was switched on to this temporary roadway in October. East
26th St. between Hiawatha Ave. and Minnehaha Ave. was also built and opened
to traffic on November 17.
1999 and beyond
Hiawatha Ave. reconstruction will continue next summer between East 32nd
St. and East 24th St. Traffic will be switched to the new bridge at Lake
St. in the fall of 1999.
In the summer of 1999, two separate project will start near Hwy. 62.
The first, East 46th St. to East 54th St.,will start with construction
of a temporary roadway between East 46th St. and Minnehaha Creek. Hiawatha
Ave. traffic will use this temporary roadway during construction of Hiawatha
Ave. near East 46th St. A new bridge over Minnehaha Creek and a land bridge
(Hiawatha Ave. will be underground) will be built just north of Minnehaha
Creek. This tunnel/land bridge will be about seven hundred feet long and
will connect Minnehaha parkland on both sides of Hiawatha Ave.
The second project consists of reconstructing the interchange of Hiawatha
Ave. and Hwy. 62.
