Book Recommendation Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men

by Katie Fleming-Vogl, State Research Performance & Implementation Manager, Research & Innovation

Evidenced by our public engagement efforts and the Diversity and Inclusion core value, MnDOT recognizes the importance of inclusion in our decision making and planning. As part of this process, we must understand and learn from past experiences. In her book, Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, Caroline Criado Perez discusses how the failure to include women's perspectives in science, medicine, engineering, design, policy, and planning negatively impacts women.

Backed by research and data, Criado Perez explains how the exclusion of women resulted in disparities such as: disproportionate injury (including transportation-related safety), health risks, dangerous pharmacological impacts, negative workplace outcomes, and disparities in basic services, career growth, and economic well-being.

While this book raises awareness about the damaging impact of excluding women's perspectives, the author offers clear, concise strategies to address the issue. Most often, the solution is simple; just include women in research planning, policy making, decision making, and science.

My thoughts as I read this book:

  1. What other critical voices and experiences are excluded?
  2. Are there unrecognized gendered issues in transportation operations?
  3. How can the inclusion of women's perspectives improve MnDOT's recruitment and retention efforts?

The importance of inclusion cannot be understated, and we all have a role in fostering inclusion. This book, along with a collection of other diversity, inclusion, and cultural competency resources, is now available at MnDOT Library. If you are unable to visit in person, a librarian can send you books and other resources.

There are many ways to contact the library to request materials or ask for research assistance: by phone at 651-366-3791, by e-mail at library.dot@state.mn.us, by request form at Ask a Librarian, or in person (8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday). The library is located in Room 175 of the Transportation Building in St. Paul.
