Highway History Resources Available Online
by Marilee Tuite

The recent issue of Kaleidoscope (PDF), a quarterly newsletter for transportation librarians, pointed out some online resources for highway history. We were compelled to share them here:
- The FHWA provides a history of the Interstate Highway System, including a few videos produced by its predecessor, the Bureau of Public Roads.
- The Highway Statistics Series has an archive going back to 1945. For example, you can learn that Minnesota's total motor-fuel consumption was 542 million gallons in 1945 (PDF), compared to more than 3.1 billion gallons in 2011.
- For past editions of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), H. Gene Hawkins, Jr., a professor at Texas A&M, has collected and digitized editions going back to 1935. He also provides presentations on the handbooks, including the evolution of the U.S. pavement marking system.
MnDOT Library's site maintains a section devoted to Minnesota transportation history, including links to a brief history of MnDOT, history publications in the catalog, and past commissioners.
