All in a Day's Work
By Sheila Hatchell
MnDOT Library gets some interesting questions. Recently, a couple stopped in after visiting the Helena Hernmarck Tapestries exhibit at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. While reading about the tapestries, the couple learned that one of the artist’s tapestries was available at the Transportation building (MnDOT Central Office Building) in St. Paul. Though none of the librarians could recall seeing a tapestry hung in the building, super-sleuth reference librarian Karen Neinstadt decided to see what she could find out.
Karen contacted the Swedish Institute and spoke with the Public Relations official, who confirmed that there is a tapestry hung in the Transportation building, on the south wall of the Cafeteria. Created in 1996, “The Four Elements” is 20 feet by 5 feet.
This artwork was commissioned through Minnesota Percent for Art in Public Places, a program sponsored by the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Department of Administration, with support for this project from the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Thank you Karen, for teaching us all a little bit more about our building!
