What's a QR Code?
By Jim Byerly
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional bar code. QR codes were designed to be quickly read by machines and were initially used in the automotive industry to track cars and parts. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background.
Why use a QR code?
Whereas a standard barcode can store a relatively small amount of data such as a number, a QR code can store up 4,296 alphanumeric characters. QR codes can store data made up of numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, or Kanji.
QR codes can be quickly read and interpreted by cell phones with a QR reader app. The data can include a web address, GPS coordinates, or text. QR codes appear in magazines and packaging.
