Variable Pedestrian Clearance Interval
The Variable Pedestrian Clearance Interval (VPCI) project utilizes automated pedestrian detection via video-based pedestrian detection sensors in order to improve safety and efficiency. The video camera sensors are installed at the signal pole at each end of the crosswalk. The system is programmed for a minimum pedestrian countdown time. However, when a pedestrian is detected within the crosswalk by the cameras the "Flashing Don't Walk" time will be extended to accommodate these pedestrians. If the minimum countdown is reached, and no pedestrians are detected within the crosswalk, the "Flashing Don't Walk" time can be skipped altogether.
