Solving Work Zone Challenges With ITS
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applies advanced technologies to enhance safety, mobility, efficiency and productivity of the transportation system. Construction and maintenance work is necessary in order to meet the growing needs of maintaining our transportation infrastructure. These work zones often create challenges in traffic management. Transportation agencies are deploying ITS to help monitor and safely manage traffic flow through and around work zones for road workers and users. MnDOT has a need to enhance safety within and in close proximity of work zones. In order to best utilize low cost high benefit ITS technologies MnDOT is undertaking this project to identify the top work zone ITS challenges and conduct a systems engineering process that will lead to a successful deployment of systems in future construction projects.
