ITS Design

ITS encompass a broad range of wireless and wire line communications based information and electronics technologies. When integrated into the transportation system's infrastructure, and in vehicles themselves, these technologies relieve congestion, improve safety and enhance American productivity. But the decision to install an ITS system or not can be difficult. The ITS warrants website is available to use to assist planners and designers in making that decision.

ITS projects have many similarities to traffic signal and roadway lighting projects. But they also have many unique characteristics and considerations. The purpose of MnDOT ITS Project Management Design Manual (PDF) is to give designers familiar with ITS elements, the process and information necessary to guide the design of ITS elements for MnDOT. This manual is intended for agency and consultant personnel engaged in ITS component design project management.

MnDOT has also prepared several types of ITS plans and can be used as samples.
