Why are the roads in northeast Minnesota still so slippery?
MnDOT is aware of the slippery conditions on many highways in northeast Minnesota. Salt and other materials don’t work well when air temperatures fall below 15 degrees. Even if the chemicals work a little during the day, the melted or slushy ice water refreezes at night. We have been applying sand in some areas, but high speed traffic and even the wind has been blowing it off the road.
Our plow drivers are doing everything they can to make the roadways safe, but until temperatures warm up early next week, roads will remain icy in many areas. There have been many crashes this week because motorists are driving too fast for the road conditions. Please slow down.
