Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) - Highway 7 Operational Test

Project Description

The Highway 7 system provided lateral guidance and collision warnings to drivers of snowplows, ambulances and State Patrol squad vehicles. The technology employed included DGPS, magnetic pavement marking tape, radar detection, a heads-up display, and several types of warning devices. A field operational test was conducted from November of 2001 through March of 2002. Due to the unusually light winter weather, the results of the on-road testing were inconclusive. However, the Minnesota Department of Transportation was encouraged by the performance of the intelligent snowplows, and planed to continue testing through state supported research during the winter of 2002-2003.
