University of Minnesota Transit Way

Project Description

The objective of this project was to decrease the number of accidents along the University of Minnesota’s transit way. This transit/bicycle dedicated corridor crosses several public roads between the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses. There was an inordinate amount of accidents reported along this stretch of roadway since its opening in 1992. The accidents were between the vehicles crossing the transit way and the bicyclists and buses using the transit way. The cause of these accidents can be contributed to poor sight lines and poor driver behavior. This project utilized both Autoscope technology and magnetic loops to detect bicycle and bus traffic in the transit way, and warn crossing vehicles to stop ahead of time.
