SmartTape Magnetic Lateral Indication Systems for Vehicles

Project Description

3M developed a system that uses magnetized lane-marking tape to help vehicles sense distance from the side of the road. Mn/DOT tested this system from November 1995 to February 1996 on a three-mile track at its Mn/ROAD pavement research facility near Monticello, Minnesota. During the 1997-98 winter season, 3M tested the item in a real-world environment along three miles of I-94 near Fergus Falls. 3M used the results from these tests to develop a product that can be used by snowplows to navigate rural roads in blizzard "white-out" conditions.
