Smart Work Zone

Project Description


Smart Work Zone was an innovative application of video, signing and traffic technologies deployed temporarily at roadway construction and maintenance sites to allow operations staff to monitor conditions and manage traffic in order to make travel safer and more efficient. This cost-effective, highly adaptable system was tested in two separate construction projects during the summer and fall of 1996.

 

During the operational test, 66% of 200 surveyed motorists who traveled through the work zone saw the changeable message signs; 80% of those travelers indicated they remembered the messages, and said the messages were easy to read and understand. Travelers also felt the in formation was accurate and timely.
