Non-Instrusive Traffic Detection (NIT1)

Project Description

The goal of this two year test on non-intrusive technologies was to provide traffic data collection practitioners with useful information on performance of various non-intrusive traffic detection, counting, speed measuring and classification technologies. The devices were considered non-intrusive if they could be installed, calibrated and maintained without closing traffic lanes. The test was performed in a variety of traffic and climatic conditions to test the full range of capabilities of each device and technology. Urban freeway and intersection locations in Minneapolis provided a wide variety of traffic volumes, speeds and vehicle mix conditions as well as climatic conditions including snow, rain, fog, sun glare and extreme cold.
