Advanced Rural Transportation Information Coordination (ARTIC)

Project Description

The objective of ARTIC was to test technology applications serving the operations of several public agencies in Minnesota's rural Arrowhead Region. The core of the project was to develop a single centralized communications center serving multiple agencies. Reductions in response time for accident and road condition emergencies have been achieved through the co-location of dispatch personnel for the Departments of Public Safety and Transportation. Communications have been improved among agencies to achieve pro-active response to maintenance needs of transportation personnel and traveler information needs of travelers.

ARTIC provided future direction in improving rural transportation. The successful deployment of this project lead to a statewide system of transportation operation and communication centers (TOCCs) throughout Minnesota.
