MN/DOT ANNOUNCES SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA
1999 IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
Willmar, Minn. - Safer and smoother highways in the southwest
12 county area will result from this summer’s estimated $30 million improvement
program that was announced today by the Minnesota Department of Transportation,
District 8.
Improvements range from spot repairs to complete reconstruction
(see attached project list). Highway maintenance and construction
workers will be out in full force this spring and summer to complete these
projects. Motorists are reminded to watch for work zones, slow down
and give workers plenty of room to work.
In the last ten years there have been 11,000 street and highway
work zone crashes in Minnesota. Those crashes have resulted in 64
fatalities and 5,500 injuries to workers, pedestrians and motorists.
Ninety-eight percent of the work zone fatalities were travelers. Mn/DOT”s
work zone safety message is See Orange. We're in the WORK ZONE Together.
To avoid delays caused by these projects, motorists are encouraged
to obtain information about work zones and detours in the following ways:
• Call for statewide recorded road condition information at 1-800-542-0220
24-hours a day, or for the hearing impaired call 1-800-657-3994
• Call for local recorded road condition information in the Willmar,
Marshall and Hutchinson area at 320-235-9230 24-hours a day
• Statewide road condition and other transportation related information
