Southwest Minnesota concludes 2018 construction program

WILLMAR, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation 2018 construction program has come to a conclusion.  In District 8 (Southwest Minnesota), the 2018 construction program delivered 18 projects, paving approximately 300 lane miles of roadway at a cost of approximately $40 million. District 8 encompasses twelve counties: Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, McLeod, Meeker, Murray, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville and Yellow Medicine.

In spite of a late start due to April blizzards, and several postponements due to an unbelievable amount of rainfall, it was a successful construction season. Accomplishments include several bridge projects, several cold-in-place recycle projects, a number of paving projects, districtwide striping, signing, bridge maintenance, bridge painting, and culvert repair projects.

Some of the projects started or completed during the 2018 Construction Program:

  • Highway 7 – resurfaced 15 miles from just east of Silver Lake to the junction of Highway 25.
  • Marshall bridge projects – Highway 19 bridge rehabilitation and historic preservation; as well as a bridge rehabilitation for the Highway 68 bridge.
  • Highway 19 – a cold-in-place preservation project from Marshall to Vesta.  Cold-in-place consists of milling asphalt pavement in place, crushing the materials, adding oil, remixing it, and then relaying the materials with a paver and compacting it.
  • Highways 19 and 71 in Redwood Falls – construction of a continuous two-way left-turn lane from Cook Street to Patton Street, plus the addition of a new signal system, replacement of two signal systems, and many improvements to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Components of this project will be completed in spring due to cold weather.
  • Highways 22 and 55 – resurfacing projects with ADA upgrades in Eden Valley.
  • Highway 23 – construction of a Reduced Conflict Intersection in Marshall. Components of this project will be completed in spring due to cold weather.
  • Highway 23 – resurfacing project from Willmar to New London with upgraded traffic signals, sidewalks and pedestrian crossing in Spicer to meet modern ADA standards.
  • Highways 40 and 212 – resurfacing projects beginning at the MN/SD border.
  • Highway 67 – bridge replacement and stream stabilization at the Lac qui Parle River.
  • U.S. Highway 71 – two separate resurfacing projects in Kandiyohi County from Willmar to Belgrade, plus the addition of six new left-turn lanes, a right-turn lane and a bypass lane, as well as a pedestrian underpass.
  • Highway 75 – resurfacing project in Pipestone.
  • Highway 212 – resurfacing project from Montevideo to Granite Falls, including a culvert replacement and the lining of existing culverts.
