Contractor selected for Willmar Wye project

WILLMAR, Minn. — Bid opening for the road portion of the Willmar Rail Connector & Industrial Access Project, also known as the Willmar Wye, occurred on September 26, 2018. The apparent best value proposer, The Hoffman Team, has been selected through the Design-Build best value process to design and construct the roads and bridges that are part of the project. Major participants of the team include Hoffman Construction Company, Lunda Construction Company, and Bolton & Menk, Inc.

The Willmar Wye is a public-private partnership between Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway (BNSF), Minnesota Department of Transportation, Kandiyohi County, and the City of Willmar, to build a new rail line bypass on the west side of Willmar.

After the opening of the bids, the award process typically takes six to eight weeks. The project partners also continue to work toward finalizing the master agreement for the project. Pending completion of those items, the contract will likely be awarded in mid-to-late November 2018. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2019.

The Willmar Wye provides a direct connection between the Marshall and Morris Subdivisions of the BNSF rail network, reducing the number of trains passing through downtown Willmar. The new rail line is located adjacent to the Willmar Industrial Park and will provide opportunities for direct rail access, encouraging economic growth.
