Public meeting about Hwy 59 construction near Slayton set for Aug. 23

WILLMAR, Minn. – Anyone interested in learning about the Hwy 59 construction project from Hwy 30 in Slayton to Hwy 14 is invited to an open house Thursday, Aug. 23, at 5 p.m.

The event will be held at the Murray County Fairgrounds 4-H Building, 3048 South Broadway Ave., Slayton, Minn.

Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Transportation and project contractors, Knife River Corp. and C.P.R. Contractors Inc., will provide a progress report along with plans for upcoming construction activities. They also will address questions or concerns about the project.

The 17-mile construction zone includes three different projects that were combined to reduce the overall impact on motorists and residents. Combining the projects will allow the contractors to work more efficiently and reduce the length of time it would take to complete them individually. The three projects include six miles of pavement resurfacing, intersection realignment and the repair of 11.6 miles of concrete roadway.

The project involves removing 4.5 inches of the existing pavement and replacing it with 4.5 inches of bituminous pavement from Slayton to the north junction of Hwy 30, also known as “Pete’s Corner.”

The s-curves at Pete’s Corner will be reconstructed to enhance motorist safety by improving the sightlines along the intersections of Hwy 30 and Hwy 59.

The third part of the project involves the repair of cracks and chips in the concrete roadway from the north junction of Hwy 30 to Hwy 14.

The improvements will increase durability, reduce future maintenance costs and provide a smoother and safer road surface.

The project began July 9 and is scheduled to be complete in October, weather permitting.
