Historic Hwy 24 bridge in Meeker County to be relocated to Mower County

WILLMAR, Minn. – The historic bridge that once carried Hwy 24 over the North Fork of the Crow River in Meeker County will soon be relocated to Lake Louise State Park in Mower County, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Crews will begin preparing the bridge for transport to a rehabilitation facility beginning Aug. 22; it will be transported to Lake Louise State Park after the rehabilitation is complete. MnDOT removed the bridge from its former site during the summer of 2009.

The bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of 24 bridges from across the state that MnDOT has identified for long-term preservation.

A recently completed management plan recommended the bridge be rehabilitated and relocated to a site with less demanding use. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was identified as willing to accept the bridge and the long-term maintenance associated with it. The bridge will replace an aging bridge within Lake Louise State Park that currently serves a campground.

As part of the bridge rehabilitation, old paint will be removed, steel members will be repaired or replaced and the entire bridge will be repainted. An interpretive panel will be placed near the bridge that will include information about the structure and photos of it before and after construction.
