Mn/DOT continues to monitor the Business 71 intersection north of Willmar
Plans additional safety modifications based on traffic flow observations
WILLMAR, Minn. —The Business 71 intersection safety project at Kandiyohi County Road 24 and 23rd Street Northeast which opened to traffic on Nov. 23, continues to be monitored by the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Following initial traffic flow observations at the intersection, Mn/DOT has decided to install additional reflective delineators on curves for southbound and northbound traffic accessing Kandiyohi County Road 24 and 23rd Street Northeast. Also, additional signing for the newly constructed emergency vehicle crossover will be installed. This crossover is for emergency vehicles only. Motorists who use the crossover may be fined by law enforcement.
Installation of overhead lighting is expected to be completed by mid-December, weather permitting.
When new construction projects involving changes to traffic patterns are open to traffic, Mn/DOT monitors how traffic moves through the project. Observing actual traffic movements can help to ensure signing, striping or other features are optimized and modified as needed.
Intersections similar to the one on Business 71 have improved safety by reducing the number of injury crashes by approximately 80 percent.
