Old Highway 19 bridge south of Morton to close to vehicular traffic Sept. 2
Bridge will remain open to ATVs, snowmobiles and pedestrians
WILLMAR, Minn. — The Old Highway 19 bridge, one mile south of Morton, will close permanently to vehicular traffic beginning Thursday, Sept. 2, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The bridge will remain open to ATVs, snowmobiles and pedestrians.
Recent Mn/DOT inspections found that concrete deterioration on the bridge has progressed, requiring restriction of bridge loads. No critical bridge deficiencies were found during the inspections.
Mn/DOT crews will place signs and jersey barriers at each end of the bridge, leaving six-foot openings to allow ATVs, snowmobiles and pedestrians access to the bridge. Mn/DOT will continue to conduct annual routine bridge inspections on the structure.
Built in 1927, the bridge has been used as a local-traffic-only access to Sulphur Lake since 1997.
Mn/DOT urges motorists to drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a roadway that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
