Highway 23 north of Highway 19 in Marshall reopens Aug. 21
WILLMAR, Minn. – Two lanes of Highway 23 north of the Highway 19 junction in Marshall will reopen Aug. 21.
Highway 23 has been completely closed to traffic from Lyon County Road 33 to Highway 19 since June 7 for paving, construction of a pedestrian underpass, sidewalk, retaining walls, storm sewer and lighting work.
Eastbound and westbound traffic will be channeled onto the two eastbound lanes of Highway 23 while crews complete paving the westbound lanes.
The completion of this one-mile segment marks a major milestone in the 12.2 mile, $16.7 million concrete overlay and reconstruction project on Highway 23 from Russell to Marshall which began May 3. The completed project will reduce maintenance costs and improve pavement strength.
Other Highway 23 project updates
- A detour on Highway 23 remains in place south of Marshall from Lyon County Road 5 near Lynd south to Lyon County Road 2 for paving operations, shoulder work and landscaping.
- The Highway 23 and Highway 19 intersection will remain a four-way stop until further notice.
- Highway 19 has been reduced to one eastbound and one westbound travel lane; this will continue until approximately Friday, Aug. 27. All lanes will reopen approximately Saturday, Aug. 28.
- The Highway 23 project is scheduled for completion on October 15, 2010, weather permitting.
- Project information and a detour map are available at: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d8/projects/hwy23marshall/ or at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/roadwork/current.html.
Returning students please note:
In addition to the Highway 23 project, numerous city streets within the Southwest Minnesota State University campus are being resurfaced. This city project should be completed in a few days.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation recommends that students access Marshall High School from Highway 23 and leave using Highway 19.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are encouraged to access Marshall High School using Amiret Street—not Highway 19 until all lanes on Highway 19 have reopened. Pedestrians and bicyclists should watch for and follow posted signs.
Returning college and high school students are urged to allow extra time, slow down, pay attention to signing and be courteous to other drivers as the school season starts.
