Mn/DOT takes additional measures to alleviate Highway 23 traffic congestion in Marshall

WILLMAR, Minn. - Mn/DOT continues to make modifications to the traffic control in an effort to reduce traffic congestion along the Highway 23 project corridor in Marshall.  Motorists have been experiencing backups during peak traffic times at the intersection of Highway 23/Highway 19/Highway 59 due to single lane restrictions and traffic signal lights replaced by a four-way stop.

The restrictions are a necessary part of the resurfacing project on Highway 23 from Russell to Marshall that began on May 3.

The additional measures include:
* Relocated the four-way stop signs closer to the middle of the Highway 23/19/59 intersection.
* Right-in-/right-out turns have been added to the west side of Highway 23 that caries traffic on Lyon, Saratoga and 4th Streets.
* A three-way stop sign has been installed at Saratoga Street to allow full access to Highway 23 in order to relieve some of the traffic at Highway 59.
* The speed limit has been reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph on Highway 23 southwest of the Southwest Minnesota State University.
* Mn/DOT has designed temporary traffic signals for the intersection of Highway 23 and Highway 59 which will be installed the week of May 10.
* Mn/DOT has worked with the city of Marshall to hire police staff to provide traffic control at peak traffic times.

Mn/DOT has coordinated with local officials regarding these and other possible future modifications.

The 12-mile resurfacing project extends from Russell to one-half mile north of Highway 19 in Marshall.  The project will be constructed in two phases and consists of resurfacing, construction of a pedestrian underpass, storm sewer, lighting and sidewalk.  The project will reduce maintenance costs and improve pavement strength.

The entire project is expected to be completed by October 15, weather permitting.

Project information and detour map is available at: http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d8/projects/hwy23marshall/
or at http://www.dot.state.mn.us/roadwork/current.html.

During construction and road maintenance work, Mn/DOT urges drivers to:
* Never enter a road that has been blocked with barriers or cones.
* Be patient.
* Plan ahead and expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
* Stay alert, expect the unexpected.
* Avoid tailgating.  Keep plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead.
* Check www.511mn.org for up-to-date information about traffic and road conditions.
