WILLMAR, Minn. - The consultant firm of CH2M HILL has been hired by the City of Willmar, Kandiyohi County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation to further study the intersection of North Business 71, Highway 294, Kandiyohi County Road 24, and 23 Street N.E. in Willmar.
The consultant began the study in August with the final report expected at the end of November. The consultant will evaluate eight alternatives which were selected by the city, county and Mn/DOT in order to improve safety at this intersection. The alternatives will be evaluated based upon factors such as traffic operation, travel time, safety, access cost and feasibility.
A Road Safety Audit was completed at this intersection in 2006. As a result of the audit, numerous minor revisions were made to the intersection. In May, new stop and yield signs equipped with LED lights were installed for east- and west-bound traffic at the intersection. At that time, the city, county, and Mn/DOT determined to hire a consultant to further evaluate the potential long-term improvements that were identified in the Road Safety Audit. The recommendations of the study may be used by the three road authorities if additional improvements at the intersection are warranted.
