Willmar, Minn. - (1:00 p.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation in Willmar (District 8) will be closing state highways southwest of the Minnesota River at 2:00 p.m. today (March 1). Due to zero visibility as a result of strong winds, combined with heavy snow, it is necessary to close state highways in the following counties: Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Redwood, Pipestone, Murray, and Yellow Medicine. Roads will remain closed until further notice.
The road closures are expected to expand to other District 8 counties north of the MN River later today.
All snowplows in these areas will be pulled off highways and the non-interstate road closure devices (NIRCO) will be activated throughout these counties. A fine may be imposed by State Patrol if motorists ignore these devices.
When a road is closed it is illegal to travel. Motorists can be fined up to $1,000 and/or 90 days in jail for ignoring a road closure. In addition, if travelers need to be rescued from a closed road, other expenses and penalties may apply. Motorists should adjust their travel plans accordingly and allow Mn/DOT crews to clear and recover the roadways.
Travelers can obtain current information on road conditions, construction delays and weather reports from Mn/DOT’s 511 Travel Information Service by dialing 5-1-1, or on the internet at www.511mn.org.
