Mn/DOT, District 8, Area Road Conditions Update

Willmar, Minn. - The Minnesota Department of Transportation are warning motorists that difficult driving conditions exist in Pipestone, Murray, Lincoln, Lyon, and portions of Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, and Yellow Medicine counties.

The current heavy snow, high winds, scattered slippery stretches and compaction, and poor visibility is making travel extremely dangerous for motorists in these locations. Snow is expected to move into Redwood Falls, Kandiyohi, McLeod, Meeker, and Renville counties later this evening and tomorrow.

Mn/DOT offers the following winter driving tips:

* Slow down, allow at least an eight-second interval between your vehicle and a snowplow. Snowplows travel much slower than the posted speed.
* Stay behind the snowplow. The road behind a snowplow will be safer to drive on. Also, snowplows turn or exit frequently and often with little warning.
* Never drive into a snow cloud.

Mn/DOT is urging drivers to avoid travel in the affected areas if possible, and to use extreme caution if they must travel. For more driving tips, visit the Mn/DOT Winter Workzone Safety website at www.dot.state.mn.us/workzone

Travelers can also use the 511 Traveler Information Site to check on current road conditions. This information is available on a website at www.511mn.org or by calling 511. Callers using the phone system need to make sure they stay on the line for the entire message.
