Travel routes impacted
by Memorial Day highway construction
Mn/DOT's 511 service helps drivers plan ahead
ST.
PAUL, Minn.- With nearly 200 highway construction projects underway
in Minnesota this summer, the Minnesota Department of Transportation
urges drivers to check ahead for construction information before
traveling this Memorial Day Weekend. Although workers will not
be active on the sites, work zones remain in place over the weekend.
"These projects will help relieve congestion, improve interregional
corridors and enhance safety on the state's 12,000-mile trunk
highway system," said Lt. Gov. and Transportation Commissioner
Carol Molnau. "Holiday weekend travelers can get construction
updates by calling 511, the travel information phone line, or
logging on to www.511mn.org,"
she advised.
Last year, there were 601 crashes in Minnesota during the Memorial
Day weekend killing seven people and injuring 297. Crashes in
work zones in 2002 increased 22 percent from 2001. Drivers can
improve safety in work zones by slowing down and paying attention.
