Highway 4

St. James to Sleepy Eye

About this project

The Hwy 4 project between St. James and Sleepy Eye includes roadway, bridge, and drainage improvements.  In addition to resurfacing approximately 25 miles of roadway, three bridges will be replaced.

This project was previously planned for 2023 construction, but is now moving out at least one year. MnDOT has been working closely with both Brown County and Watonwan County to determine various needs on Hwy 4, one of which is the desire by local partners to make it a 10-ton route. This would require not only a more significant pavement fix than originally planned, but potentially a grade raise to meet the designated weight limit standards.

Balancing cost and pavement needs across the state highway system, MnDOT is looking closely at various alternatives and budgets to determine if the project will be able to achieve a 10-ton route. To address any pavement issues between now and construction, MnDOT staff will monitor and conduct maintenance as needed until a future project.
