Installation of cable median barriers along Interstate 90 starts April 30

MANKATO, Minn. — Motorists can expect temporary lane closures along Interstate 90 from the South Dakota border to Worthington starting Monday, April 30 through August, as crews install 40 miles of cable median barriers.

In addition to temporary lane closures, a work zone speed limit of 60 mph will be in effect when workers are present.

Cable median barriers are a traffic safety tool used prevent cross-median collisions and reduce fatal crashes by 90 percent. In addition to the ability to lessen crash severity, cable median barriers cost less than permanent concrete barriers.

Minnesota traffic safety efforts are components of the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) program, which employs an interdisciplinary approach to reducing traffic crashes, injuries and deaths on Minnesota roads. The TZD program works with key partners to provide technical assistance, materials and guidance to local groups to reduce crashes and fatalities that result from them.

H & R Construction, of Dalton, MN, was awarded the contract with a bid of $3,900,000.
