Hwy 22 Victory Drive landscaping meeting in Beauford on Nov. 17

Highway 22 construction information also available

MANKATO, Minn. – The public is encouraged to attend an open house on the plantings for Highway 22 Victory Drive from Mapleton to Mankato scheduled for 2019, after the two years of reconstruction in 2017-18.  The open house is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the United Methodist Church, 15797 Highway 22, Beauford.

Staff from the Minnesota Department of Transportation and their design consultant will present historical background information related to the Victory Drive corridor and its related landscape followed by several conceptual landscape designs for the future Victory Drive corridor and gather feedback from the community.

Victory Drive trees were planted by the Mankato Garden Club with the help of the Mapleton American Legion and other community groups when the highway was reconstructed in 1951.  Maple River students have also been instrumental in replanting in past years.

A steering committee with representatives from the area is helping MnDOT come up with a landscaping design that will beautify Victory Drive and pay homage to our Veterans and not be problematic for farmers, power lines and driving conditions.

An update on the road reconstruction scheduled for 2017-18 will also be provided.  The schedule for the projects is as follows:

  • 2017-18 – Reconstruct Highway 22 from Mapleton to Blue Earth County Road 15, add left turn lanes at key intersections, replace Big Cobb River Bridge at Beauford.  (Detours required)
  • 2018 – Construct roundabout at Highway 22 and Blue Earth County Road 90 and resurface from CR 15 to CR 90.  (Uses same detour)
  • 2019 – Replace trees removed in 2017 with landscaping (to be determined) to beautify Victory Drive and honor Veterans, landscape Highway 22/CR 90 roundabout
