Groundbreaking Ceremony for Highway 169 Saint Peter Design-Build Project
MANKATO, Minn. - A groundbreaking ceremony will be held for the Highway 169 Saint Peter Design-Build Project on Monday, June 29, 10 a.m. at Minnesota Square Park to celebrate the start of construction and kick off the “Discover Saint Peter” campaign. Speakers will include Congressman Tim Walz, State Senator Kathy Sheran, State Representative Terry Morrow, Saint Peter Mayor Timothy Strand and Mn/DOT Commissioner Tom Sorel.
The $17 million project is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Work started in June and will be completed in early 2010. The Highway 169 Design-Build Project extends from Highway 22 South to Union Street, a distance of about 1.5 miles. Shafer Contracting Co., Inc. was selected as the contractor.
Traffic detours and major construction are expected to begin on Monday, July 6, weather permitting. Advance construction activities, including a mill and overlay on Front Street between Jefferson and Walnut, will occur prior to July 6.
“This is one of the largest construction years in Minnesota history,” Mn/DOT Commissioner Tom Sorel said. “All of us who are traveling on state roadways need to approach work zones with caution and be patient. We are putting people to work and improving our state infrastructure and we want to do it safely.”
The City of Saint Peter, in partnership with the Saint Peter downtown business community, has launched a “Discover Saint Peter” marketing campaign to encourage people to shop in downtown Saint Peter. More information about the “Discover 169” card and opportunities for prizes can be found at www.discover169.com.
A public open house is also scheduled for June 25, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Saint Peter Community Center. Weekly meetings for adjoining property and business owners will begin July 10, 7:30 a.m., at the Saint Peter Community Center.
