Mankato, Minn. – The State Highway 258 bridge over the Cottonwood River near Comfrey will remain closed for most of the winter, according to officials at the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Traffic is detoured to Brown County Roads 24 and 5 and State Highway 14.
Mn/DOT officials closed the bridge Sunday (Nov. 11) after it was struck by farm equipment in case the damage weakened the structure.
Further inspection earlier this week indicated that the damage is significant and the 1947 truss bridge will need extensive repair work before it can be safely opened to traffic.
Although it is one of the few fracture critical and structurally deficient bridges in the Mankato/Windom DOT area, it had been inspected this summer and determined safe for traffic until it was hit.
