Medians on Highway 169 in St. Peter Subject of Open House

Mankato, Minn. – Medians appear to be the key to improving pedestrian safety on U.S. Highway 169/Minnesota Avenue in St. Peter and transportation officials are looking for comments on proposed design and aesthetic treatments. A second open house is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 25 at the Senior Center in the St. Peter Community Center.

“Based on research into pedestrian safety and input from our advisory committees, we are moving forward with the median concept,” explained Peter Harff, project manger at the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  “Medians provide a major safety benefit to pedestrians and will aid in a better flow of traffic through St. Peter.”

While medians will be beneficial in many respects and the City of St. Peter will invest in making them aesthetically pleasing, they will result in impacts to some access points.  Mn/DOT and city officials will be working closely with concerned individuals to minimize those impacts.

Mn/DOT and the City of St. Peter have recruited businesses, Gustavus Adolphus College and state and local historic preservation groups to work on advisory committees that have been meeting periodically during the project development.

A project is tentatively scheduled for 2009 construction.  For background information, go to http://www.dot.state.mn.us/d7/projects/169stpeter/index.html .  Individuals with a disability who need a reasonable accommodation to participate can contact Rebecca Arndt at 507-389-6883 or through the Minnesota Relay Service at 1-800-627-3529.
