One-day bridge closure for research work at Hwy 42 in Elgin planned Nov. 20
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists on Hwy 42 will be detoured around a bridge on the north end of Elgin for approximately seven hours on Monday, Nov. 20 while the Minnesota Department of Transportation works with researchers from the University of Iowa to gather information at the bridge.
The detour for southbound Hwy 42 motorists is to travel west on Wabasha County Road 25, then south on Wabasha County Road 2, then east on Main Street in Elgin, which will reconnect with Hwy 42. The northbound detour is the reverse of this route. The short-term closure is expected to go from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
MnDOT will work with the researchers to install temporary monitors across the bridge to be used in conjunction with permanent monitors on the structure. Researchers will gather load bearing information. The bridge is of a normal design but was built with Glass Reinforced Polymer Rebar. This research project is expected to continue for several more seasons.
