Hwy 52 construction, bridge projects begin May 1, travel delays possible
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Highway 52 motorists will encounter a series of construction projects between Rochester and Rosemount this season that could cause traffic delays, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Several projects have started, but two more are scheduled to begin on May 1:
- Road resurfacing in the northbound lanes north of Rochester to south of Cannon Falls.
- Bridge replacements over the Little Cannon River at Cannon Falls.
Highway 52 will remain open during the duration of the projects, but lane closures will occur as the construction work progresses. Temporary ramp closures will occur during the resurfacing project as the paving crews move past a highway ramp.
MnDOT has established a website to find all of the projects on Hwy 52 this summer, so motorists can get details or sign up for email updates. The site is at: www.dot.state.mn.us/d6/projects/hwy52corridor/
The resurfacing work on Hwy 52 will require lane closures with the work scheduled to begin north of Rochester on May 1. It’s possible that traffic delays could occur during commuting times and on weekends during this project, which will be complete in mid-August.
The bridge replacements at Cannon Falls are between the interchanges for Goodhue County Road 24 and Highway 19. On May 1, the left traffic lanes will be closed in each direction while crossover roads are built in the median.
Once that is completed, traffic will be crossed over into single lanes in each direction in the northbound lanes, while crews replace the southbound bridge.
Once that bridge is built, traffic will be switched over so the northbound bridge can be replaced. Traffic delays are also likely in this work zone during high-traffic periods, such as weekends.
Additionally, projects on Hwy 52 that will have traffic restrictions include the Hwy 58 bridge replacement at Zumbrota, where there are ramp closures and lane closures through fall.
From Cannon Falls to Coates, there will be Hwy 52 lane closures at times to install reduced conflict intersections through fall. Further north, the Hwy 52 bridge over Dakota County Road 42 at Rosemount will be replaced and County Road 42 will be reconstructed to a four-lane highway.
Lane and ramp closures are expected through fall.
Because of traffic volumes on Highway 52, motorists might see traffic delays. By planning alternate routes, planning different departure times or adding time to a trip, motorists can avoid some of the disruptions involved during construction of these highway and bridge improvements.
