Northbound Hwy 63 ramp to northbound Hwy 52 ramp to open Oct. 31

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Traffic will reopen Oct 31 on the northbound Highway 63 ramp to northbound Highway 52 in Rochester as the bridge deck replacement project prepares to wrap up, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The opening of the ramp in time for the morning commute will return the regular route to motorists using Highway 63 north to get to Highway 52 north. It’s the fifth busiest interchange in Greater Minnesota with an average daily traffic of 74,000 vehicles.

The ramp provides a key route for commuters and other motorists traveling north into Rochester or continuing north on Highway 52 to the Twin Cities. Motorists entering northbound Highway 52 from northbound Highway 63 will use a new third lane that was built to improve safety. Highway 52 traffic will use the other two lanes at the merge point.

On Oct. 25, the ramp from southbound Broadway (Highway 63) to northbound Highway 52 reopened.

Construction crews replaced both Highway 52 bridge decks and connected a third lane of Highway 52 north to the bridge during the project.

Highway 52 traffic will be single lane in both directions in the construction zone as crews remove the temporary crossover lanes used during the bridge deck replacement work. That’s expected to be completed later next week.

Highway 63 lane closures will remain as bridge painting including the southbound Highway 63 to southbound Highway 52 detour. Those motorists continue south on Highway 63, exit at 40th Street and return on northbound Highway 63 to take the southbound Highway 52 exit. Southbound motorists on Highway 52 wanting to go northbound on Highway 63 will use the 40th Street exit to access Highway 63 north.

The $4.2 million project is replacing the Highway 52 bridge decks over Highway 63 and connecting Highway 52 north’s third lane to the bridge.

The prime contractor is Zenith Tech, Inc., of Waukesha, Wis. Overall, the project is expected to be completed in early November. To learn more about this project, go to MnDOT’s project page: www.dot.state.mn.us/d6/projects/hwy52-63-interchange/.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
