Overnight Hwy 63 detours in Rochester for bridge deck work Aug. 31
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists on Hwy 63 in Rochester will encounter detours and lane shifts at Highway 52 after 7 p.m., Aug. 31 and continuing overnight, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The detour and lane shifts will be in place for crews to pour concrete on the northbound Highway 52 bridge deck, which crosses over Highway 63. Traffic will follow marked detours during the pouring process. Traffic delays are possible in south Rochester.
The detour for motorists who are northbound on Highway 63 and traveling into Rochester on Broadway (Hwy 63) will be to exit onto Highway 52 south to the Olmsted County Road 1 interchange, travel under the highway and return on northbound Highway 52 to exit onto northbound Broadway.
Later in the evening, southbound Broadway (Hwy 63) traffic will be shifted over into the northbound lanes near Highway 52 and travel next to the northbound traffic under the bridge before returning to their southbound lanes on Highway 63.
Work is expected to be completed prior to the Thursday morning commuting time on Sept. 1.
The northbound Highway 63 ramp to northbound Highway 52 remains closed. Motorists who are northbound on Highway 63 and traveling to northbound Highway 52 toward Rochester will now be detoured to southbound Highway 52 where they will take the next exit at Olmsted County Road 1 and then connect to northbound Highway 52 via the interchange.
Temporary traffic signals at County Road 1 regulate traffic through the area. Motorists should plan for delays, choose alternate routes or adjust travel times, if their travel takes them through this area in south Rochester. The interchange is the fifth busiest in Greater Minnesota with an average daily traffic count of nearly 75,000 vehicles.
Motorists southbound on Highway 63 (Broadway) in Rochester who want to exit onto northbound Highway 52 are detoured south on Highway 63 to the 40th Street exit, cross over and return on northbound Highway 63 and complete the detour by following the signs on the above mentioned route.
Highway 52 motorists in both directions continue in single lane traffic adjacent to each other. Work on this portion of the project is scheduled to be completed Oct. 19.
The $4.2 million project is replacing the Highway 52 bridge decks over Highway 63 and connecting Highway 52 north’s third lane to the bridge. The prime contractor is Zenith Tech, Inc., of Waukesha, Wis. The project, which includes painting the bridge after construction, is expected to be completed by Nov. 3.
