Orange barrels on a highway

Temporary nighttime Hwy 63 detour planned at Rochester airport on April 18-19

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists on Highway 63 near Rochester International Airport in will encounter a temporary detour at night April 18 and 19 that will take them up and down the on and off ramps at the Olmsted County 16 interchange, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

On Monday, April 18, construction crews will be setting beams for the new bridge over Highway 63, so northbound Highway 63 traffic will be routed up and down the ramps from 8 p.m. to midnight in south Rochester. Flaggers at the top of the ramp will ensure that motorist traffic from the airport and Olmsted County Road 16 can enter the highway or cross the current bridge.

On Tuesday, April 19, construction crews will be setting beams for the new bridge over Highway 63, so southbound Highway 63 traffic will be routed up and down the ramps from 8 p.m. to midnight in south Rochester. Flaggers at the top of the ramp will ensure that motorist traffic from the airport and Olmsted County Road 16 can enter the highway or cross the current bridge.

Normal traffic will resume each night once the six beams are set in place. If work finishes sooner than planned, the highway will be opened at that time.

Olmsted County is reconstructing the bridge and interchange at the airport. The project began in 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 26, 2016. The contractor is Minnowa Construction of Harmony, Minnesota.

MnDOT urges motorists to always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
