Hwy 52 lane closures begin April 17 in Rochester as construction begins
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Motorists on Highway 52 near the Highway 63 interchange in south Rochester will encounter lane closures beginning Sunday night, April 17 as construction work begins in preparation of bridge deck repair, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The left lane closures in both directions of Highway 52 will provide construction crews a safe area to build the crossover roads that will be used when the bridge decks over Highway 63 are replaced.
On Monday, April 18, ramp meters on the northbound Highway 63 entrance loop to northbound Highway 52 will be operating. The traffic signals will release vehicles singly onto Highway 52 north to ensure that Highway 52 traffic remains moving and vehicles are merging at a safe rate. The ramp meter will only be in operation during this construction project, which will be completed in November.
Traffic delays are expected for motorists on Highway 52 and Highway 63 during the peak morning and afternoon drive times. Motorists should plan for longer commute times during construction or seek alternate routes. The interchange is the fifth busiest in Greater Minnesota with average daily traffic of 74,000 vehicles.
The ramp meter is the first such device used in Greater Minnesota, although they are commonly used on freeway entrance ramps in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
As construction progresses motorists should pay attention to changes in highway ramp access. Ramp closures will occur from May through September during construction, which will necessitate detours. All detours will be marked. Additional announcements will be made prior to each ramp closure to allow motorists to plan their travel times or alternate routes.
Additionally, digital drive time estimator signs are in place – one on northbound Highway 63 south of the 48th Street interchange and one on northbound Highway 52 near the Olmsted County Road 1 interchange. These signs provide driving time estimates to the Highway 52-63 interchange and the Sixth Street Southwest interchange via Highway 52.
