Orange barrels on a highway

Hwy 74 reopens north of Beaver in Whitewater Management Wildlife Area

ROCHESTER, Minn. – A 7-mile gravel stretch of Highway 74 north of Beaver in Winona County will reopen on Friday, April 1after being closed during the spring thaw, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

This portion of Highway 74 was closed 15 days due to poor road conditions caused by the spring thaw. To aid in the drainage and maintenance, MnDOT maintenance crews rolled and bladed the gravel road. They also added gravel on some portions of the road.

The stretch from Beaver (Winona County Road 30) to Weaver (Wabasha County Road 26) is MnDOT’s only gravel road and is within the Whitewater Management Wildlife Area north of Elba. Whitewater State Park is to the south of this area. The area is a prime place for bird watchers.
