Southern Rail Corridor open house scheduled for Jan. 28

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The public is invited to attend an open house regarding the Southeastern Minnesota Freight Rail Capacity Study on Monday, Jan. 28.

The open house will occur from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Rochester International Airport Event Center, 7333 Airport View Drive SW, Rochester, Minn.

A presentation will occur at 5:30 p.m. Presenters will share several scenarios with varying amounts of potential rail traffic through downtown Rochester. They will also discuss how these scenarios would impact the nearby road network and options for reconstructing nearby roads that will lessen the impact to vehicle traffic flow. This information will also be available on boards throughout the open house.

Public comment from these scenarios will inform the final report on the Southeastern Minnesota Freight Study. This report will evaluate the potential to mitigate or relocate the existing Canadian Pacific/Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern freight rail line in and around Rochester to accommodate a potential increase in train traffic and address safety concerns associated with the current route through the city’s downtown.

This is the third in a series of four open houses about the southern rail corridor. The event is hosted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Olmsted County Regional Railroad Authority.

A final open house will occur March 13 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Rochester Community & Technical College Heintz Commons.
